Custom Piston Rod Manufacturing: From Drawing to Delivery — A Complete Guide Ordering custom piston rods from a manufacturer overseas can feel complex. What information do you need to provide? How long will it take? What quality checks are performed before shipment? This guide walks you through our complete process.
Step 1: Inquiry — What Information We Need To generate an accurate quote quickly, please share: - Rod outer diameter (e.g. Ø50 mm) - Total length (e.g. 1,200 mm) - Thread spec (e.g. M48×2 both ends / one end) - Base material (42CrMo4 / 1045 / 304SS) - Surface treatment (Hard chrome plated 0.02–0.05 mm) - Surface roughness (Ra ≤ 0.2 µm) - Quantity (e.g. 500 pcs) - Drawing / 2D sketch (PDF or DWG preferred) - Delivery port (FOB Shanghai / CIF Rotterdam) Don't have a drawing yet? No problem — send us key dimensions and application description, and our engineers will propose a specification.
Step 2: Technical Review & Quotation - Engineering team reviews drawing for manufacturability - Material availability and surface treatment feasibility confirmed - Formal quotation issued within 24–48 hours (standard) or same day (standard sizes)
Step 3: Material Procurement - Certified bar stock sourced from approved mill suppliers - All material comes with mill test certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1) - Incoming inspection: diameter, straightness, and surface condition checked
Step 4: Machining & Turning - CNC lathes ensure concentricity of threads and rod body - Correct undercut dimensions and chamfers per drawing
Step 5: Induction Hardening - Surface hardness: HRC 52–62 - Core remains tough and ductile - Hardness verified by Rockwell testing on each batch
Step 6: Cylindrical Grinding - Final diameter tolerance: h6 or f7 (ISO 286) - Straightness: ≤ 0.5 mm / 1,000 mm - Surface roughness: Ra ≤ 0.2 µm
Step 7: Hard Chrome Plating - Chrome thickness: 0.02–0.05 mm (verified by XRF) - Hydrogen embrittlement relief baking: 190°C / ≥4 hours
Step 8: Final Inspection ✅ OD and length per drawing ✅ Thread pitch and fit (go/no-go gauges) ✅ Surface roughness (profilometer) ✅ Visual: no pits, cracks, peeling on chrome ✅ Straightness check ✅ Optional: ultrasonic flaw detection
Step 9: Packing & Shipment - Plastic end caps on threads - Moisture-proof stretch film or oiled paper wrapping - Wooden crates or steel cages for sea freight
Transit times:
Europe 25–35 days | USA 28–35 days | Middle East 18–25 days | Southeast Asia 7–14 days
Lead Times:
- Standard sizes (stock): 7–14 days - Custom machined, standard chrome: 25–35 days - Custom machined, special treatment: 35–50 days - Sample / prototype: 10–15 days
FAQ :
Q: Can I order a sample before placing a bulk order?
A: Yes. Sample lead time is 10–15 days, and the cost is credited against your first bulk order.
Q: Do you accept DDP terms?
A: We primarily offer FOB and CIF. DDP can be arranged case-by-case.
Q: What is the warranty?
A: We guarantee conformance to agreed specification. Dimensional or surface non-conformances will be replaced or credited.
Q: Can you add a protective coating other than hard chrome?
A: Yes — electroless nickel plating, zinc plating, and phosphating are available. Keywords: custom piston rod manufacturer, hard chrome piston rod supplier, piston rod machining process, hydraulic rod manufacturing China, piston rod lead time
